The harbour porpoise is the only German native whale species, observable with some luck on the coasts of North- and Baltic Sea. The waters around Sylt and Amrum are the nursery of the local population and are now Germany's only whale sanctuary. It is said to have happened that mother whales have left their babies in the "care" of bathers for a short time while they went in search of food!
